When it first invaded Bangkok, the phallic-shaped waffles have stirred controversy. A food stall sold penis-shaped pastries and desserts. It received backlash from Thai conservatives. The emphasis, of course, from those who called for a boycott, was the shape of the product.
Thailand is the second country in Southeast Asia (next to Cambodia) with the largest Buddhist population at over 93%. Thai Buddhism may have become modern through the years, but it has never completely adapted to foreign influence.
Now the question is, will the Catholic-dominated Philippines be more “open-minded” to the dick-shaped waffle?
Cockcakes MNL started selling out the controversial waffles in January this year. While it has yet to put up its first kiosk in Manila, Cockcakes MNL is already up on its toes accepting bulk orders from enthusiastic customers. Meet-ups are around Paranaque and Mall of Asia only, but deliveries can also be arranged.
Twenty-three-year-old Cockcakes MNL founder Bryan Bautista said it’s a challenge to put up a stall in any of the popular malls around Metro Manila. Like in Thailand, these cock waffles will surely raise eyebrows of the conservatives in the Philippines. This won’t stop Cockcakes MNL, though, on introducing its cockeyed creation to the Filipino foodie community.
In fact, for Valentine’s Day, Cockcakes MNL recommends its “Bouquet of Cocks” as an alternative to the good old but expensive bouquet of roses. It’s a naughty idea for a Valentine gift but way cheaper, that many would be thrilled. The waffles are stuffed with sausage or vanilla.
Thailand did not invent the penis waffle; Taiwan started it. Some of you who’s been to Taiwan or Japan may have even tried the penis waffles. Taiwan is known for its sprawling stalls of tasty delights. These waffles, though, are sold mostly around Taiwan’s markets. The Taiwanese customers show no qualms about nibbling “penis dogs” while walking along the busy streets.
The high regard for the phallus shouldn’t even be mocked or considered obscene. In Japan, there are a number of shrines dedicated to the worship of the penis.
One shrine, in particular, that is centered on penis worshipping is the Kanamara Matsuri in Kawasaki. Candies and vegetables are carved liked penis. The penis festival started in 1969. The festival’s highlight is the parade of the phallic decorations and carvings. The festival has become Japan’s tourist attraction. The main festivities fall around the first Sunday of April. April is also the cherry blossom season in Japan.
